Solar pumps for ponds, 12 volt pumps for special applications

Solar pumps for fish ponds are generally NOT a good idea.

I am now referring to the low cost non-rechargeable solar pumps you see in many aquatic shops. Almost every fish pond needs continuous flow through the pond filter to keep water biologically clean and free from toxic chemicals. Solar pumps are not continuous and should not be used.

Solar pumps for ponds and fountains

If all you need is a fountain pump that will run when the sun shines and produce a small fountain head then solar pumps are possibly OK.

This means most of northern Europe is not the place to have solar powered pond pumps running in a fish pond especially and probably not even in a pond fountain arrangement.

I tried a solar pump from a leading supplier in the UK a couple of years ago ( a Diamond pond pump) and used it in my own pond as an experiment. It was taken out a week later and I live in a land of sunshine - 8 hours per day average.

Some types of solar pumps come with a larger solar panel and battery that charges to allow the pump to work if the sun is not shining - until the battery power runs out. Wait a few years for solar pumps for ponds, I suggest.

12 (sometimes 24) volt pumps ... also called Low Voltage or LV pond pumps

These are low voltage pumps and are also often available in 24 or 12 volt pump format.

These are ideal where any risk of injury especially in public places from electrical failure (people cutting cables, tripping over cables, dogs biting through cables and so on). The 12 volt pumps are supplied with a mains transformer used to reduce the voltage. Pond lights are often low voltage and come with transformer for safety reasons.

The 12 volt pumps are normally low in capacity and often not suitable for a waterfall for example.
